And what else should we as an industry be considering? How can training influence both the seafarers’ competence and thus the shipping companies bottom line? And how do increased data collection requirements impact their role and training requirements.

The Marine industry is advancing into the ‘online’ world at a tremendous rate. Unfortunately, like the ‘cyber boom’ of the late 90’s, there is little in the way of regulation and no desire to spend money in an industry already hurting from a long and continuing recession. Cyber security has caught the attention, and is becoming a large focus for many, driven at the moment by providers looking at new markets and the growing awareness of shipping to the significant threat it faces.
